Among Avatar's best installments is honored with its own Magic: The Gathering collector's set.
Typically, clip shows are loathed from viewers as a pointless waste of time, or sometimes viewed as a requirement for series during the period of weekly production. This wasn't always true, and Avatar: The Last Airbender proved it through "The Ember Island Players," a popular installment in its last season now being getting an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.
Information regarding the collector's edition
The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was revealed earlier this month. It features five separate collections, and while one titled "My Cabbages!" is clearly humorous tribute to Avatar's most famous minor character, the remaining sets seem somewhat less imaginative, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by installment 17 of the third season of the animated show, this collector's drop includes these particular cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image represented as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
The reason this segment stands out
Audiences of the series fondly remember this particular episode, which functioned as a review of Aang and the group's quest leading up to the conclusion. Different from other recap episodes, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated by budget restrictions or scheduling problems. The producers truly wanted to offer viewers an opportunity to recap the show's narrative, however, they opted to approach it inventively.
During the installment, the main characters view a stage show depicting their adventures in a theater located on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is wildly exaggerated, over-the-top, and completely amusing. It succeeds since it plays with the characters' perception regarding their own identities, juxtaposing them against how the world (and notably the antagonist nation) views them. It has an ideal level of meta-commentary, and it results in arguably the finest interpretation of Avatar we have had.
Worth and availability
When it comes to cost-effectiveness, this represents an excellent Secret Lair due to one key factor: Braid of Fire. This card is valued between $20 and $40 on various platforms at the time of writing, and at $29.99 you can obtain the entire Secret Lair, or $39.99 for the foil version.
Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender collection can be accessed during early access events on Nov. 14 and launches globally on November 21.
