Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in military or defense capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to protect and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that violate the law or our constitution."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical digital publications and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The representatives who participated in the video also published a response.
"We serve as former service members and national security professionals who value this United States and made an oath to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"What's most telling is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "Every American must come together and condemn the president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the death of government members."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and determine all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "We see active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to members of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
