‘Digital Eavesdropping’: Unilever Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s Social Media Breakthrough.
First identified more than 150 years ago in the oil fields of Pennsylvania, the modest tin of Vaseline could hardly be considered an clear candidate for digital platform algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a popular subject on TikTok has thrust it into the lead of an promotional upheaval, where major corporations are allocating substantial funds to content creators and devoting less capital to advertising goods in legacy broadcasters.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
First created commercially in the 1870s by chemist Robert Cheeseborough, who noticed oil rig workers rubbing their skin with a byproduct of the drilling process. Today, a spree of amateur-created clips have chronicled its broad application in “practical tricks”.
Promoted as a remedy for cleaning shoes or extending perfume longevity, along with a cure for creaky hinges. Users have even applied it to prevent the annoyance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Harnessing the Hype
Noticing its viral resurgence, strategists within the corporation boosted the tips by tasking their in-house experts with verification and providing creators with the outcome data.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sting of chili on the mouth were confirmed. So too were ideas it could extend fragrance and restore leather handbags. Proposals that it might whiten teeth or extend lashes were disproven.
The ‘Social Listening’ Strategy
Print ads and broadcast spots would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. However, this online trend has led decision-makers to ramp up funding for content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to guide corporate planning has been labeled “social listening”. The company's chief executive, newly named, has indicated the goal is to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on digital creator content.
Adapting to New Consumer Habits
Selina Sykes, who is spearheading the social media effort, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of reaching consumers. She said engaging on social media “without dampening the fun” was paramount.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, back to when people were hanging out their laundry and sharing usage tips.
“We are witnessing a departure from a one-to-many model, where we would just broadcast out … Now it’s many conversations, many communities. Changes in digital feeds means that these audiences appear specific, but they’re not.
“Having your brand advocated by users, talked about by other people, that fosters reliability and pertinence. Creators are critical to that. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
The strategy reflects profound shifts occurring in how media is consumed, with younger consumers allocating more attention to digital networks than television, magazines or radio.
The shift is reflected in drops in traditional media advertising. Within the United Kingdom, advertising income for leading TV channels have fallen by more than £600m in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
It also reflects a merging of functions as brands effectively act as media producers, linking up with hundreds of content creators to enhance their items.
A commercial director at a major talent agency said: “Obviously there’s a flow of audiences from conventional channels and they are dedicating far more hours to Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are consuming linear broadcasts or printed matter.
“Many companies report to us people trust recommendations from the individuals they follow compared to commercial messages. This is a persistent pattern.”
He said brands could also save money by focusing on influencers over expensive broadcast campaigns, which also permits simpler message refinement to see what works.
This strategy is expanding. Advertising spending on influencer marketing is rising at quadruple the rate than the broader media sector. Stateside, it has over doubled since 2021 and is forecast to attain multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
TV's Lasting Role
Regardless of the massive shift, executives said they believed television commercials still played a key part to play, as TV channels continued to possess the influence to shape the national conversation.
Sykes said: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still the Super Bowl. It’s not about those broadcasters saying: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ It concerns who commands eyeballs … I think there’s 100% a place for them.”
