The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
