France will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader asking him to back the plan and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for comment.
