Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a small cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"It's either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Anticipation Run High
While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
