Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
