New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
