The retail giant Introduces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon TCG Products
In a significant move, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect starting November 5th, according to a company memo distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is based on each visit, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities throughout the day.
The Reseller Crisis
For the average collector, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. In recent years, speculators have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch sky-high values. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Upcoming Releases
The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.
With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will curb mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
