This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
