New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately following his victory in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, it will forever remain within me and the work I do," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he hails from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.

With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
